Dinner for a hundred…thousand

This Sunday, March 25th, two local churches will be working together to feed 100,000 people in Africa. Now my pop culture brain hears the voice of Ralphie from A Christmas Story‘s mom telling Randy eat up because there are “starving people in Africa.”
Sadly though I know all too well that the epidemic of famine has taken thousands and thousands lives in recent months. So when I saw this event was taking place, it combined all the elements that gets me excited about volunteering. People working together for a reason that was simple.
Unfortunately, I am out of town this weekend, so I figured there were two things I could do to help them out. One I could go to their website www.feed100k.com and donate. Each meal costs $.25. No I didn’t screw up the decimal point – 25 cents.
The other thing I could do is help promote the packing party on the 3/25. They’re meeting at Bates Middle School (701 Chase Street in Annapolis) and have various sessions to sign up for. Child care is available for kids 3 and under.
Over and over again on this blog I’ll be encouraging folks to go volunteer. There are all the noble reasons about helping others but there is also just that chance to go out and meet new people. Maybe I’m just lucky but any time I’ve volunteered around town I’ve had a great time and often ended up in fits of laughter with my other volunteers. (some day I shall regale the tale of the Polar Plunge and the guy in the hooters girl outfit, but that’s for another day)
So I interrupt your Saturday lounging for a moment to ask you to consider the idea of making dinner for a hundred thousand and see if you can’t lend a hand.
